How much does a wedding singer actually cost

One of the first questions couples ask when they start planning their wedding music is simple:
How much does a wedding singer actually cost?

It is a fair question. Music shapes the atmosphere of your day, from the quiet moments to the parts everyone remembers years later, and you want it to feel right. But you also want to understand what you are paying for.

I have performed at hundreds of weddings across Liverpool, the North West and beyond. I see a wide range of budgets and expectations, and there is often confusion about why prices vary so much. Here is an honest breakdown of what affects the cost and what couples should realistically expect.

The short answer

In the UK, a professional wedding singer typically costs anywhere from £400 to £1500 and upwards, depending on what is involved.

That is a big range, so let me explain why.

What actually affects the price

How long you need the singer for

A short drinks reception set will cost less than someone performing across multiple parts of the day. Ceremony, reception, wedding breakfast and evening all require different preparation and time on site.

It is also worth knowing that many professional singers have a minimum booking value for in demand dates, especially peak summer Saturdays. This means they may not offer one hour bookings on those dates, even if the performance itself is short. In many cases, booking for a longer period can actually represent better overall value.

The level of experience and reputation

A singer who performs occasionally at weddings will usually charge less than someone who does this week in week out. Experience matters more than people realise. Weddings are not just about singing songs. They are about timing, atmosphere and knowing when to step forward or hold back – reading the room is actually an important skill which the best singers have mastered.

Reputation also plays a part. Performers who are well reviewed, recommended by venues and trusted by planners will naturally sit at a different price point. You are not just paying for a performance, you are paying for reliability, consistency and peace of mind.

As a singer myself, I am proud to have amassed over 150 five star Google reviews and hundreds more reviews across other platforms including direct testimonials.

The quality of the act

Not all wedding singers offer the same level of performance. Vocal ability, stage presence and appearance, professionalism and the ability to adapt to different parts of the day all influence price.

Two singers might both cover similar songs, but the way they deliver them, manage the room and contribute to the overall experience can be very different. That difference in quality is often reflected in the cost.

The style of performance

Background music, feature performances and high energy sets all require different approaches. Some singers specialise in one style, while others offer flexibility across the day. A more involved or varied performance will usually come at a higher price.

I have learned over the years the value in covering lots of different genres. I originally started singing Swing and Rat Pack in my late teens, but my repertoire expanded to cover everything from 60s, 70s & 80s Pop, Soul and Motown, Sing-Along-Classics and Easy Listening / Romantic Piano Ballads.

Travel and location

Not all singers will charge for travel, but many do. The location can have an impact on cost for example if an overnight stay is required. If there is a lot of travel time involved, a singer may factor this in when quoting or simply offer a flat day or evening rate which covers travel.

Equipment and setup

Professional sound systems, microphones and backup equipment all come with cost. A polished setup that sounds great in a large room is not the same as a basic portable speaker. Quality equipment and proper preparation are part of what you are paying for. I’ve always believed that you can only sound as good as the equipment you use, so I have high quality BOSE PA systems, gorgeous lighting and all microphones used offer supreme sound and clarity.

What couples often forget to consider

When couples compare prices, they often only look at the final figure, not what sits behind it.

A lower quote can sometimes mean
• limited experience with weddings
• basic equipment
• no backup systems
• less preparation time
• little flexibility if plans change on the day

None of that is obvious when you are just looking at a number in an email.

Why cheaper is not always better

I have spoken to couples after their wedding who said the same thing
“I wish we had invested more in the music”

Entertainment sets the tone for the entire day. If the atmosphere feels flat during the drinks reception or awkward during the evening, it changes how the day is remembered.

Most couples would rather simplify elsewhere than feel disappointed about the one part of the day that everyone experiences together.

What you are really paying for

When you book a professional wedding singer, you are not just paying for a voice. You are paying for

• experience of real wedding days
• knowing how to read a room
• adapting to changes in timing
• working smoothly with venues and photographers
• reliable equipment and backups
• preparation before your day
• and peace of mind on the day itself

The best singers will also offer pre-event consultations and calls to discuss musical styles, genres and individual song choices.  They will also have a wide variety of genres to perform music appropriate for various stages of the day, for example if they offer an all-day package.

That is what makes the difference between someone who performs and someone who elevates the atmosphere.

A realistic way to think about budget

Rather than asking what is the cheapest option, I always suggest couples ask
What do we want this part of the day to feel like

If you want relaxed background music, you may not need a headline performer.
If you want moments that guests talk about for years, that usually requires a higher level of experience and planning.

Ultimately, a singer with a lot of experience, versatility, reputation and style will sit at the premium end of the market.

Both are valid. What matters is choosing based on the experience you want, not just the price.

Final thoughts

There is no single right answer to how much a wedding singer should cost. It depends on your venue, your timings, the style you want and the level of experience and quality you value.

If you are planning a wedding in Liverpool, the North West or elsewhere in the UK and would like a clear, honest quote based on what you actually need, I am always happy to talk things through without pressure. Contact me and we can discuss a package or quote.

Your music should never feel like an afterthought. It should feel like part of what makes your day yours.
